The Rise of ‘Los Jefes’: Team Success and a Mentor’s Duel Down Under
“The last few weeks have been absolutely crazy,” Sergio couldn't hide his excitement during an exclusive interview:
“My team and I have been performing exceptionally well. Angel and I were fortunate to play a heads-up battle and win trophies, and Bernie also did great.”
This collective breakout by Mexican players was no accident. Sergio especially emphasized the importance of team atmosphere,
“The team from Mexico has made a significant impact at this festival, and I’m really excited about the future of Mexican poker. The development and atmosphere here have been fantastic, making this experience pretty special.”
In the AU$20K Super High Roller, the heads-up showdown between Sergio and Angel became one of the most touching scenes of the entire series.
“It was an out-of-this-world experience,” Sergio recalled fondly, “Angel and I have a long history; he’s been my mentor throughout my poker journey. Playing heads-up with him in such a big event in Australia, where he lives, was surreal.”
Although he ultimately finished as the runner-up, Sergio's performance earned everyone's respect, “Even though I lost, I was still very happy for him. The whole experience felt like a movie, and it was incredibly special.”
A Champion's Mindset
Compared to last year at WPT Australia, where he made numerous cashes but couldn't clinch a title, Sergio took a major step forward this year.
“I feel much better prepared this year… I’ve put in a lot of work over the past 12 months and have improved significantly as a player. I came into this festival highly motivated and have been fortunate to win two titles.”
When asked about the secret to his success, Sergio emphasized the importance of mindset. “It’s crucial to understand that there are many things you can’t control, and it’s not worth giving your energy to those things.”
His success comes from playing at the tables with a grateful heart.
“Staying emotionally balanced is super important in these tournaments. I try to remain positive and not wear myself out. Even if things don’t go as planned, life is still good. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of the festival, and that’s the mindset I bring to the table.”
From his first tournament cash to his current double crown glory, Sergio has continuously evolved throughout his fifteen-year poker career.
“The biggest change has been my love for winning,” he admitted frankly,
“I just love to compete, perform, and keep getting better every day. Winning trophies is what drives me. That’s my thing, I’m all about winning and pushing myself to be the best.”
A New Chapter with WPT Global
Sergio’s thirst for victory is clear in his goals for the future.
“My biggest dream is to win the WPT Championship in December. Competing at such a high level and winning that title is my ultimate goal. I love the festival, the people, and the atmosphere, and I want that trophy more than anything. It’s the nicest trophy in poker, and I’m determined to win it.”
As a WPT Global content creator, Sergio Barrios continues to strengthen his partnership with the brand, with his double crown victory serving as a powerful statement of his ability and Mexico’s rising presence on the world stage.
“The trophies I’ve won so far in this festival are what make me the best in the business,” Sergio stated confidently. “My success and the titles I’ve secured speak for themselves.”
With the WPT World Championship fast approaching in December, Sergio Barrios will carry his drive for victory into the year’s biggest stage. His rise embodies the resilience, discipline, and ambition that define a true champion.
