Understanding a Donk in Poker
This term generally refers to someone whose play deviates from basic strategic principles in a way that is predictable and exploitable.
A player described as a donk will often play too many starting hands, call bets without considering odds, and make aggressive actions without a clear plan or reasoning.
Rather than a single mistake, the label usually comes from repeated patterns of behaviour. This can include calling large bets with weak holdings, overvaluing marginal hands, or making random bluffs without understanding board texture or opponent tendencies.
The term originates from “donkey,” implying poor play or lack of awareness, though it remains slang rather than a formal poker concept.
When You Might Hear the Term
You are most likely to hear “donk” used in casual conversation, either at the table or in online chat, for example: “He’s a donk, he calls everything” or “that was a donk play.”
It can refer to both the player and a specific decision. However, it is not a technical term, and more experienced players will usually describe the underlying mistake instead, such as calling too wide, overplaying hands, or using unbalanced aggression.
