What is a Complete Hand in Poker?

A complete hand is the final five-card combination used to determine a player’s strength at showdown in poker. Regardless of how many cards a player is dealt, the hand is always evaluated based on the best possible five-card combination.

This applies to all major poker variants, including Texas Hold’em and Omaha. Even if more cards are available, only the strongest five-card hand counts.

Understanding What a Complete Hand Is in Poker

A complete hand is simply your final, best five-card hand after all cards have been dealt.

In Texas Hold’em, you combine your two hole cards with the five community cards to make the strongest possible five-card combination. You do not have to use both of your hole cards, you can use any combination of the seven available cards.

For example:

Board: A♠ K♦ Q♣ J♥ 10♦

If you hold 2♣ 3♠, your complete hand is still the straight on the board (A-K-Q-J-10). Even though your hole cards do not improve the hand, the board itself forms your best five-card combination.

Another example:

Board: 9♠ 9♦ 5♣ 2♥ K♠
You hold: A♣ K♦

Your complete hand is: K-K-9-9-A (two pair, kings and nines with an ace kicker).

The key point is that your hand is only ever judged by the best five cards available, not all the cards you hold.

Understanding this concept is essential at showdown, because many beginners mistakenly believe all their cards are counted, when in reality only the strongest five-card combination matters.
