Connectors are two hole cards in poker that are consecutive in rank, meaning they sit next to each other in sequence. They are valued because they can form straight combinations when the board develops favourably.

For example, 7♠ 8♦ or J♣ Q♥ are connectors because the card ranks are directly next to each other.

Connectors are especially popular in Texas Hold’em because they can develop into strong hands that are often disguised and difficult for opponents to read.

Understanding a Connector in Poker

A connector is defined purely by card rank, not by suit.

If your cards are consecutive (like 5 and 6, or 10 and J), they are considered connectors. Their strength comes from their ability to connect with the board in multiple ways.

For example:

You already have an open-ended straight draw, meaning any 7 or Q completes your straight.

What makes connectors valuable is their playability. They can:
