Football is back! Bet on Football and the EPL
This weekend sees the traditional curtain raiser to the English Premier League (EPL) season as Manchester City face Manchester United at Wembley Stadium in the Community Shield.
In what is the most hotly anticipated Community Shield in years, the Manchester giants resume their rivalry at the home of football in a repeat of last season’s FA Cup Final with City hot favourites at the WPT® Global Sportsbook - where you can place your bets today.
City go into the game priced at 1.55, with United 4.80 and the draw at 4.0.
Back in May, City were huge favourites to see off their struggling rivals and complete the Premier League and FA Cup Double, but in their best performance of the season, it was the Reds who came out on top.
It was widely anticipated that United boss Erik Ten Hag would be at the helm for the last time, but that battling performance - plus maybe a lack of available options - led to the Dutchman retaining his job.
United fans were luke warm to the news Ten Hag was staying. After all, United had just endured their worst ever Premier League finish of 8th, ending the campaign with a negative goal difference. Throw in a Champions League Group Stage exit, all while watching their nearest rivals celebrating a fourth successive Premier League title, and the Old Trafford faithful were restless to say the least.
Ten Hag knows his side must show a marked improvement this season, and that just adds spice to an already mouthwatering Manchester Derby clash. Beat City again and United fans will feel like they’re back, a wave of positivity will wash over the Red half of the city.
But a bad result - and especially a thrashing - and the pressure will be back on Ten Hag before the season proper has even begun.
It certainly won’t be easy. Big summer signing Leny Yoro sustained an injury on United’s US tour ruling him out for three months, and striker Rasmus Hojlund is also sidelined. Ten Hag has at least made peace with Jaden Sancho, and it’s possible the forgotten England forward could feature after his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund last season.
City are at a crossroads, with manager Pep Guardiola still to agree a contract beyond this season. Pep also lost forward Julian Alvarez this week after stressing how much he wanted him to stay, the Argentinian World Cup winner joining Atletico Madrid in an £81.5million move.
With Kevin de Bruyne in the twilight of his career, this is a big season for City, and another defeat against United would be the worst possible start.
The likes of Phil Foden, John Stones, Kyle Walker and Rodri are still being eased back into action following an extended break after their Euro 2024 exploits , so expect some of the City supporting cast to be given a chance.
Look out for Oscar Bobb, the young Norwegian who has impressed in preseason and looks certain to be given more opportunities this season in the wake of Alvarez’s departure.
Of course City’s main man is another young Norwegian, Erling Haaland, and he will be chomping at the bit to get started, having sat at home while Euro 2024 and the Copa America played out.
A well rested Haaland looked fit and firing on City’s US tour, registering a hattrick in their 4-2 friendly win over Chelsea in Columbus last week.
While the attitude towards the Community Shield has been indifferent over the years, the fact both Guardiola and Ten Hag have continually stressed how important winning it is, that the Super Cup is much more important on the Continent and that to them it’s the chance to win a trophy, added to the facts this is a Manchester Derby, a repeat of the Cup Final and the added pressure of the managerial situations at both clubs means this is a game not to miss.
United’s Achilles heel last season was they conceded goals in bunches. Even if they were playing well, conceding once often led to shipping a second and third goal and the game was gone. Indeed the Reds conceded 3+ goals in 15 games last season.
Ten Hag has overseen three Premier League defeats of 4+ goals in less than 80 games in charge. Sir Alex Ferguson presided over the same number of thrashings, but in 810 games!
One price that might catch the eye of bettors at WPT® Global Sportsbook is therefore City to win by 3+goals at 4.10. In terms of correct score betting, 2-1 to City is favorite at 7.70, but as discussed, when it goes wrong for United, it usually goes very wrong. A 3-0 City win is 12.0, while 4-0 is 23.0.
Believers in Ten Hag’s United can enjoy even juicier prices. A narrow 1-0 win is 19.0, while a repeat of the 2-1 FA Cup Final victory is 15.0.
